On Saturday, October 5, 2019, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued charges on suspect Demetrius Cole, 27 years of age, of the 11900 block of Strand Place, Florissant, Missouri 63033, for one count of Murder Second Degree, one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death and one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Injury. Cole is being held on $250,000 “cash only” bond. A mugshot of Cole is attached.
The probable cause statement reads: On or about October 4, 2019, at 9:22PM, at a pedestrian crosswalk at 1826 Chambers Road, the defendant was operating a 2016 black Nissan Altima, traveling westbound on Chambers Road when he struck two child victims, riding in a stroller, pushed by their mother. Video revealed he was traveling at a high rate of speed, without headlights, and that he did not stop or brake when he struck the child’s stroller. A four year old child died of his injuries and a two year old child suffered leg fractures. The vehicle was later recovered and the defendant admitted to driving the Nissan but states it was stolen prior to the collision. However, he did not ever report the car stolen, could not describe who stole it or the location where it was stolen. The car was later recovered by the defendant but he still did not contact the police.
Video revealed the car in the location where it was recovered at 9:44PM and also puts the defendant walking to a gas station, buying gas for an unrelated car, near the collision at 9:51PM (which contradicts statements that defendant made to the police). The defendant has numerous Driving While Revoked violations and he admitted that his license was currently revoked. He has a pending Driving While Intoxicated case in this judicial circuit and he is also on federal parole for a weapons violation.
Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons are conducting the investigation.
