The Crime Scene Unit (CSU) is a support function of the St. Louis County Police Department that aids in the documentation, collection, and preservation of a crime scene and evidence. The Crime Scene Unit currently services the St. Louis County Police Department, assists the nearly 55 municipal police agencies within St. Louis County, and the Greater St. Louis Area Major Case Squad. The Crime Scene Unit is tasked with forensically processing crime scenes and locating unbiased evidence for these agencies while also offering training of a forensic nature to officers in the law enforcement community at the St. Louis County and Municipal Police Academy. Crime Scene Detectives use specialized skills to objectively identify, document, collect, process, and package evidence at crime scenes, generate reports of their investigations, and testify to the investigation for the judicial system.
The Crime Scene Unit offers forensic investigations that range from larcenies to part 1 crimes including Homicides, Assault 1st Degree, Robbery 1st Degree, Kidnapping, Sexual Assaults, Burglary 1st Degree, and Arson.
The Crime Scene Supervisor and/or Bureau Commander have final authority in determining the response of the Crime Scene Unit. As questions or situations arise, officers and/or supervisors are encouraged to contact any CSU Detective or CSU Sergeant with questions or concerns by cell phone or at one of the Crime Scene Offices.
